Some things you could do to become more sustainable

Make some small changes to what you do and be surprised by the results.

Being sustainable doesn't have to always be about the big projects.  At Hadlow College, we encourage both our staff and students to take small steps by following some of the tips below:

  • Turn off unnecessary electrical devices when you leave a room for more than 15 minutes.
  • Enable your computer to go into sleep mode and do not leave it on all night.
  • Switch off or unplug your mobile phone charger when charging is complete.
  • Close curtains or blinds at night in the winter and during the day in the summer.
  • Carry a reusable cup or bottle of water to save using disposable cups.
  • Switch off lights when you leave a room and in winter shut doors and windows to conserve heat.
  • Use recycling facilities rather than throwing everything in the nearest bin.
  • Turn off the water whilst you're brushing your teeth.
  • Save paper by thinking before you print; use print preview to check you're only printing what you need and print double-sided where you can.
  • Take a tote bag with you for shopping so you don't have to use or buy plastic bags; if you forget then re-use the plastic bag.
  • Cut down on wasted car journeys.  Car share, catch the bus, cycle or walk if you can.

By following these simple guidelines everyone can make a difference.
