Animal Behaviour Consultant

A varied role advising and instructing clients how to solve their pets' behaviour problems and providing follow-up support until the problem has been solved.  Work may be carried out in a vet's surgery or a client's home, it may also involve working outdoors.  Working hours for this role will vary and are likely to involve some evening and weekend work.

Animal Keeper

Working in zoos, farms, wildlife parks and rescue centres, an animal keeper is responsible for maintaining the health and wellbeing of the animals. In addition to the day-to-day husbandry duties, they will also work with vets to administer any prescribed medication and may assist in the animal's treatment of an animal's injury or illness.

Veterinary Nurse

Working alongside Veterinary Surgeons so as to provide a high standard of care for the animals, Veterinary Nurses are often involved in a wide range of treatments and generally work in either animal hospitals or vet practices.  Under supervision they will take part in minor surgery, diagnostic tests and monitor anaesthetic.  The role has tremendous job satisfaction and can lead to exciting opportunities abroad; a British trained veterinary nurse can usually get a job abroad relatively easily.

Pet Retailing

A number of the larger pet stores now provide areas for people with specialist species knowledge, as well as pet care advisers.  Working hours for this role will include weekends and possibily bank holidays, however there will be progression options from trainee up to supervisory and management type roles.  Salaries will be comparable to other retail businesses.

Dog Groomer

Dog groomers look after the condition of a dog's coat by shampooing, clipping, trimming and grooming it. There are job opportunities for dog groomers in pet shops, specialist grooming businesses, show dog kennels and some veterinary practices throughout the UK.Many are self-employed, and run their own business.
