Careers In Horticulture

If working with plants and gardens is attractive to you, then some of the careers which our courses lead to include:

Nursery Manager

Working in a nursery producing plants for sale either to the industry or the general public, a nurseryman will be involved in the potting, propagating and management of the general growing conditions. Their ultimate aim and responsibility is to ensure that the plants are produced to the highest standards possible using the most efficient and current methods.

Plant Geneticist

Plant geneticists apply a range of techniques to produce new and improved varieties of plants. Their role is vital to the agricultural industry, allowing it to increase and maintain yields in important crops grown for many uses, such as food and pharmaceuticals. They breed into plants various traits useful to farmers, such as disease resistance, drought tolerance and differing maturation times, and characteristics, such as nutritional value, that appeal to consumers.  They will also improve on the aesthetic qualities of ornamental plants.

Garden Designer

Combining an interest in art, design and horticulture, a garden designer will work with the garden owner to advise them on how they can create a place of beauty. These designs can be for private and commercial projects.  The role involves co-ordinating the project with contractors and nurseries and, although this is challenging, offers an interesting and flexible career.

Conservation Officer

Involved in the management and conservation of landscapes large and small, conservation officers ensure that access to the countryside whether for recreation, social or economic needs is strategically balanced with maintaining a sustainable and balanced natural environment.

Tree Surgeon/ Arboriculturist

A varied role involving cultivating and managing trees, hedgerows and shrubs. Work is undertaken in both rural and urban settings and includes all aspects of felling, preserving, planting and protecting trees, sometimes using heavy equipment. Tree surgeons will also provide clients with advice and information on trees and planting including tree surveys and assessments.
