More about Horticulture, Landscape & Design Courses faculty

Formerly known as an NVQ, this course builds on the skills learnt previously and is designed for those students working in a position of responsibility within the amenity horticutlure industry. Enabling you to develop craft-level skills, you will study the principles of landscape evaluation and design, hard landscaping construction, soft landscape installation and management, health and safety and basic management of materials and labour. You will be responsible for much of your own learning and evidence generation, with the assessors providing guidance and input where necessary.

Training will take place in the workplace at a suitable time arranged with your assessor.

Entry Requirements

Diploma in Work-Based Horticulture (Level 2) or equivalent is desirable.

Additional Experience
Students must be in a position of responsibility within the industry.

18 months flexible delivery with some college attendance.

Course Content

  • Estimate resource requirements and programme work
  • Promote, monitor and maintain health, safety and security
  • Manage yourself (management standards)
  • Manage information for action (management standards)

Plus a choice of 5 units which are most relevant to your area of work. Some of the units include:

  • Specify and monitor landscape maintenance
  • Maintain and develop decorative horticultural displays
  • Prepare sites for landscape construction and installation
  • Manage planted areas for their amenity value
  • Construct hard landscaped components
  • Transport large root-balled trees
  • Prepare and apply pesticides
  • Lead the work of teams and individuals to achieve objectives
