Students benefit from a wide range of links with commercial nurseries, research institutes, organic producers, public and privately owned gardens as well as exposure to the retail world through our onsite garden centre. The College is also a member of the Royal Horticultural Society; NCCPG and the Hardy Plant Society.

Formerly known as an NVQ, this course builds on the previous levels. Students will benefit from a blend of theory and practical assessments all aimed at maximising their potential. You will be responsible for much of your own learning and evidence generation with the assessors providing guidance and input where necessary. In addition, this course can be tailored specifically to examine the issues within the nursery stock; glasshouse or fruit sectors. Training will take place in the wokrplace at a suitable time arranged with your assessor.

Entry Requirements

Diploma in Work-Based Horticulture (Level 2) or equivalent is desirable.

Additional Experience
Students must be in a position of responsibility within the industry.

18 months flexible delivery with some college attendance.

Course Content

  • Estimate resource requirements and programme work
  • Promote, monitor and maintain health, safety and security
  • Manage yourself (management standards)
  • Manage information for action (management standards)

Plus a choice of 5 units which are most relevant to your area of work. Some of the units include:

  • Create grassed and planted areas
  • Manage sports turf areas
  • Manage drainage and irrigation systems
  • Manage planted areas for their amenity value
  • Prepare and apply pesticides

Portfolio of evidence, practical assessments, projects and assignments.
