Formerly known as an NVQ, this course develops the essential skills and knowledge required to work in production horticulture can can be tailored to specifically examine the issues within the nursery stock, glasshouse or fruit sectors. Training will take place in the workplace at a suitable time arranged with your assessor.

Students must be employed or in a 1 year work placement within the industry.

Course Duration
Diploma: 1 year flexible delivery with some college attendance. Apprenticeship: 15 months flexible delivery with some college attendance.

Course Content

  • Monitor and maintain the growth and development of crops
  • Monitor and maintain health and safety
  • Develop personal performance and maintain working relationships
  • Clear and prepare sites for planting crops
  • Set out and establish crops
  • Identify the presence of pests, diseases and disorders

Plus, choice of 3 units which are most relevant to your area of work. Some of the units include:

  • Harvest and prepare intensive crops
  • Transport supplies of physical resources within the workplace
  • Propagate plants by vegetative methods
  • Prepare growing media
  • Identify, collect and prepare plants for dispatch
  • Receive goods and materials into storage
