Food 4 Thought wins at RHS Hampton Court
The Hadlow College garden - "Food 4 Thought" - which shows the importance of fruit production within the setting of the county of Kent, has won a Gold medal and been awarded the prize "Best in Class" for small gardens at this year's RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show.
Designed by Mandy Buckland, (a graduate of the BA (Hons) Garden Design programme) and built by current BA (Hons) Garden Design students, this garden represents past, present and possible future farmed crops and highlights food miles, the climate and the importance of water as a commodity.
Some of the unique parts of the garden are: the planted windows that frame the crops of the past and the future, a water feature that collects rainwater for use in the garden and food plants within the table and walls that are literally at your fingertips (thereby reducing the "field to fork" miles to the optimum distance - nil). The vertical planting increases the production space whilst allowing the garden to be used for entertaining. The paving is heavily textured and the contemporary wall cladding is smooth, giving an unusual textural counterpoint.
