More about Equestrian Studies faculty

Enabling students to gain a solid understanding of the equine industry in a vocational way, this programme is divided between the classroom, practical sessions, visits and lecture demonstrations. You will be given the necessary management skills for a career within the equine industry and, by the end of the programme, be particularly suited to work in the competition horse industry as either a coach, trainer, rider, stable manager, centre manager or events co-ordinator. This programme can be structured to your individual experiences.

Entry Requirements

120 UCAS points made up from A levels, preferably one in a Science based subject, or relevant Level 3 vocational qualification.   All applicants should also have a GCSE grade C or above in English, Maths and Science.

Course Duration
Full time: 2 years, 2-3 days per week plus work experience. Part-time: 3 years, 1-2 days per week plus work experience.

    - Riding and training horses
    - Veterinary science

 Year 2

  • Equine & human sports science
  • Horse breeding management
  • Applied enterprise management
  • Introduction to research skills
  • Work-based learning project
  • A choice of:
    - Riding and training horses on the flat
    - Equine health management
    - Riding and training horses over fences
    - Stresses in the sports horse

The work based learning modules are a key feature of this course.. You will be expected to complete a work based project which occurs over an eight week period at the end of the academic session. You will be supported in finding an appropriate placement and your progress within a working environment monitored.

Assessment Method
Coursework (written assignments, projects and presentations) as well as end of year examinations.

Progression Routes
Successful students can enhance their skills and progress onto the BSc (Hons) Equine Management programme. Graduates will also be fully prepared for managerial and technical positions within the equine industry.

Specialist Equipment Needed
BSI approved riding hat, boots, jodhpurs, whip and grooming kit.
