Developing practical design skills and emphasising the fundamental principles of floristry and retailing, this course is an ideal stepping atone to more advanced qualifications. Ideal for budding florists of any age, you will gain the knowledge, skills, and techniques necessary to cope with the day-to-day responsibilities involved in a floristry shop. Within this course you will also benefit from a minimum of 5 days work experience in a florsitry shop. This exposure to real-life situations will dramatically enhance your learning and enable you to understand the different situations a florist encounters.

Entry Requirements

Applicants should have a profile of a minimum of 4 GCSEs, 2 of which should be at grades C - D.  This profile should also preferably include 2 in English, Maths or Science.

Students need to have a willingness to learn and an aptitude for coursework.

Although no floristry experience is required, students should have a genuine interest and commitment to pursue a career in floristry.

Course Duration
Hadlow: 1 year, 3 days per week.

Course Content

  • Identify, check and monitor the quality of incoming cut materials
  • Identify and maintain the condition of plants and planted designs
  • Plan, prepare and construct tied floristry designs
  • Plan, prepare and construct funeral designs
  • Plan, prepare and construct floral arrangements
  • Plan, prepare and construct wedding designs with floral materials
  • Display of floristry goods
  • Introduction to working in the floristry industry
  • Introduction to function decorating using floral displays
  • Functional skills

Assessment Method
Each unit will be assessed by a series of practical assessments supported by short written assignments. An externally set multiple-choice examination will cover all aspects of the course.

Progression Routes
Successful students can further enhance their skills by enrolling onto the NPTC Advanced National Certificate in Floristry or, should they wish to, straight into the floristry industry.

Specialist Equipment Needed
Flowers will be provided, however students will need to purchase some basic sundries from the college shop.Note: A camera is essential to record design work and a sketch book is recommended.
