BRITISH HORSE SOCIETY (STAGE 2)

64 horses, a number of which are ex-competition, including foals and stallions
2 indoor arenas, one of which is international size (35m x 60m)

Industry Links

Students at Hadlow receive a 5% discount at Speedgate Saddlery. Students also benefit from strong links with international competition riders, the Society of Master Saddlers, Ken Lyndon-Dykes and the partnership with Bell Equine veterinary practice.

More about Equestrian Studies faculty

This course is an ideal preparation for those students already working in the industry who wish to improve their skills and progress onto a higher level course. You will be encouraged to take part in, or observe, the regular equine shows and clinics which the College hosts.

Entry Requirements

1 GCSE at Grade C or above or equivalent.

Life experiences will be taken into account when considering applications.

Course Duration
1 year, 1 day per week.

Course Content

Equitation theory
Develop riding skills on the flat
Horse husbandry and stable skills
Fitness and training
Horse anatomy and physiology
Training horses from the ground
Work experience (1 weekend every 2nd week at the College yard or equivalent approved yard)

Course Content (optional)

Riding instructor training (additional cost) (must have BHS Stage Two complete)
Develop riding skills over jumps (must have BHS Stage One or equivalent)

Assessment Method
Assessment is through BHS examination with students encouraged to relate theory to practice at all stages.

Progression Routes
Successful students with satisfactory grades can further enhance their skills by enrolling onto higher BHS examinations or the Level 3 Extended Diploma. Alternatively, you may enter the industry as an instructor, groom assistant, stable manager, rider, welfare officer or trainer.

Specialist Equipment Needed
You will need a BSI approved riding hat, riding boots, gloves, jodhpurs, navy blue jumpers or sweatshirts, body protector, whip, hoof-pick and grooming kit.
