Providing a solid foundation in the theory and practical skills required within fisheries management, this course encourages students to engage in real life working environments. You will become actively involved in the development and management of the college’s aquatic resources, together with commercially syndicated and association owned off-site facilities. You will also participate in hatchery work so as to produce fish for the sport fishery industry and carry out lake restoration projects.

Entry Requirements

Applicants should have 4 GCSEs at grades A* - C, 2 of which must be English, Maths or Science or have a full level 2 qualification at Merit in a relevant subject.

Additional Experience
Life experiences will be taken into account when considering applications.

 Year 1 

  • Understanding fish biology and behaviour
  • Understanding water quality
  • Undertake estate skills
  • Understanding fish health and welfare
  • Understanding aquatic ecosystems
  • Understanding coarse game and sea angling techniques
  • Understanding freshwater fish population survey and management
  • Undertake an Investigative project in the land-based sector
  • Understanding fishery management
  • Functional skills

 Year 2

  • Understanding freshwater aquarium systems
  • Understanding stillwater fishery creation and management
  • Understanding river fishery creation and management
  • Understanding water pollution control and management
  • Understanding cyprinid fish farming
  • Understanding freshwater and wetland management
  • Business management in the land-based industries
  • Understanding principles of physical and biological environmental processes
  • Undertake and review work related experience in the land-based industries
  • Functional skills

 

Assessment Method
Continuous assessments throughout the year comprising written and oral tests, practical assignments and identification tests.

Progression Routes
Successful students can progress into higher education with the FdSc Fisheries Management programme. Alternatively they can pursue a career in the industry at a technical or supervisory position.

Specialist Equipment Needed
Fishing tackle, Environment Agency rod licence, chest waders, warm and waterproof clothing and steel toe-capped boots.
