Level 1 Qualification in Land-Based Studies - Fisheries

On this one-year course that encompasses Fisheries, Horticulture, Countryside, and Animal care, students will study a range of subjects to provide them with an understanding of the wider land-based sector.

The following are examples of some of the topics students can expect to study within the course:

• Safe and effective working practices
• Develop performance in land-based industries
• Work experience and employability skills
• Maintain and establishing plants
• Wildlife and conservation
• Functional skills/GCSE - English and maths

The course is delivered through a range of practical sessions using the facilities at Hadlow hatchery and Grove lakes. There are some classroom based sessions.

Assessment is though a range of styles including practical assessments, photographic and video evidence logs, workbooks and written assignments.

Once completed students can progress onto a Level 2 Fisheries qualification. Typical employers include local authorities and public sector organisations such as The Environment Agency, as well as commercial fisheries, water companies, wholesalers and angling clubs.

Steel toe capped boots, waders, wellington boots and appropriate outdoor all weather clothing.

Entry requirements

You will need a minimum of two GCSEs at D-E / 3-2 Grade or equivalent (Entry level 3).

You should also have a keen interest in the subject and demonstrate a commitment to the curriculum area.
