Functional Skills Mathematics will improve your job prospects and will be very important if you want to progress with your learning. These qualifications are designed to give learners the mathematics skills to function confidently, effectively and independently in education, work and everyday life. The will provide a strong foundation for further academic and vocational study and for employment, to support students to progress to a full range of courses in further and higher education. This includes GCSE Mathematics courses, as well as courses in other disciplines.

If you are aged 19 or older and have not previously attained a GCSE grades A* to C in English and maths this course could be FREE.

The course duration is thirty-two weeks, comprising weekly one and a half hour sessions with the expectation of two hours independent study between sessions.

Edexcel Functional Skills Mathematics is a linear course, focused on the application of maths skills in everyday life.

Assessment consists of an externally set and marked, 90 minute exam where the use of a calculator is permitted. The exam can be online or paper based.

• Fours rules of number
• Fractions, decimals and percentages
• Ratio and proportion
• Graphs and charts
• Averages
• Using measures
• Conversions
• Area perimeter and volume
• Peer assessment
• Reflection
• Teamwork
• Independent learning

Functional Skills Mathematics provides a strong foundation and will develop employability skills. It will prepare for further academic and vocational studies and can support progress to a full range of courses in further and higher education. This includes GCSE Mathematics courses, as well as courses in other vocational disciplines.

You require the following equipment:
• a calculator
• pens highlighters (three colours) and pencils
• ruler
• notepad
• a file to keep your work safe

Access to revision guides and texts books, further resource are available on MOODLE to be used throughout the duration of the course.

Entry requirements

All students are required to carry out a pre-course assessment and short interview. Previous qualifications in mathematics will support the level of Functional Skills you work towards.
