This course covers a wide range of Horticultural subjects and is aimed at four distinct careers paths within the Horticultural industry; production horticulture, garden design, hard and soft landscaping and garden amenity maintenance. On completion of the course the students will have the knowledge and skills to start their own garden maintenance company, undertake site surveying and garden design briefs for clients, grow a variety of crops in a commercial situation for clients/garden centres and to landscape clients’ gardens from building walls, nurseries, concreting, raised beds, fencing and paving.

Level 3 students will have responsibilities within the public gardens at Broadview to maintain gardens and be involved in new gardens. Supervisory experience will be gained by supervising and assisting some groups within the gardens.

Crop responsibly will be given to level 3 students.

This course consists of a range of practical and written assessments, examples include tree planting, building walls and fences, laying concrete, growing plants from a range of cuttings and driving machinery. Written assessments include garden drawing designs and essays on understanding plant and disease management in protected structures. There are also externally marked exams for plant and soil science and working in the land-based sector.

On completion of this qualification you will have the knowledge and skills to enter a highly sort after industry. Former students have set up their own garden maintenance companies, work in the sports turf industry, local council parks and gardens and commercial nurseries or garden centres. This qualification will allow you to progress onto horticultural higher education here at Hadlow.

Why should students study this programme?

Students who wish to pursue a career in the horticultural sector at supervisor or management level.

Students will gain experience working in a brand new glasshouse with hydroponics and LED lighting systems.

Intensive food production skills will be gained from the vertical food production farm.

Essential skills for designing, building and maintaining gardens will be gained.

Students who have experience in their own gardens, work experience on nurseries / gardens and or a strong interest in the sector.

Entry requirements

90 Technical Diploma - (1 year)
Minimum of 4 GCSEs grades A*- C / 9 - 4 or equivalent (Level 2 Diploma), which must include GCSEs in English AND maths A*- C / 9 – 4 Grade or equivalent (Level 2 Functional Skills).

180 Technical Diploma - (2 years)
Minimum of 4 GCSEs grades A*- C / 9 - 4 or equivalent (Level 2 Diploma), which must include GCSEs in English AND maths A*- C / 9 – 4 Grade or equivalent (Level 2 Functional Skills) plus a Science A*- C / 9 – 4 Grade.
