This course is for adult students who do not have a grade A*- C /9 - 4 in GCSE Mathematics.

Our helpful mathematics classes delivered by highly experienced lecturers will cover a range of elements including: algebra, formula, fractions, ratios and shape; as well as these essential topics, the course will also encourage students to develop confidence in mathematics and build a positive attitude towards the subject.

The GCSE Mathematics syllabus can divided into six broad areas, which you will spend time studying in class as well as part of self-directed study:

1. Number
2. Algebra
3. Geometry
4. Measures
5. Statistics
6. Probability

If you are aged 19 or older and have not previously attained a GCSE grades A* to C in English and maths this course could be FREE.

The course duration is thirty two weeks, comprising weekly 2 hour sessions with the expectation of two hours independent study between sessions.

The Pearson Edexcel Level 1/Level 2 GCSE (9–1) in Mathematics is a linear course.

Assessment consists of three externally examined components Students must complete all assessment in the same series.

The programme develops skills in the following areas:

• Percentage calculations
• Calculating area, perimeter and volume
• Conversions
• Charts and graphs
• Ratio and scaling
• Algebra
• Team work
• Problem solving
• Independent learning

GCSE (9-1) Mathematics provides a strong foundation for further academic and vocational study and for employment, to help students progress to a full range of courses in further and higher education.

You will require the following equipment:

• a scientific calculator
• pens, pencils, rubber, ruler
• protractor and compass
• note pad
• A file to keep your work in

Access to GCSE specific revision guides or text books will further support progress.

Why should students study this programme?

GCSE mathematics is a seen as a good indicator of the level of skills that employers require when recruiting. The majority of university courses require at least a grade C/4 in GCSE English. Some university courses go further and ask for specific subjects at GCSE, with certain grades.

This will be primarily classroom based, with opportunities to apply skills developed by utilising the excellent college resources. You will take part in group work, as well as individual study.
You will also be supported by a shared online space detailing key areas of the course, with access to videos, online assessments and online revision and notes.

Entry requirements

All students are required to carry out a pre-course assessment. A previous Grade D/3 in GCSE Mathematics or Level 2 in Functional Skills (or equivalent) will benefit applicants’ opportunity of being accepted onto the course
