This course is designed to meet the needs of teachers in a substantial role in further and/or adult and community education, trainers in the public and private sector as well as those working with 14-19 year olds in vocational settings or in the Lifelong Learning Sector. Trainees on this programme come from a wide range of public and private teaching or training environments such as the Police Force, Emergency Services, local authority services, private companies and the National Health Service.

Applicants from a registered charitable organisation who are teaching/training in a voluntary capacity will also be considered on an individual basis. In year 1, all trainees study on the Diploma in Education programme. In year 2, those who already have a degree may select the PGCE (Professional Graduate Certificate in Education and Training) pathway for their end of programme classification.

Those without a degree can achieve an end of year 2 classification of Diploma in Education. Successful completion of the programme means you are eligible to apply for Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status with the Education and Training Foundation.

Trainees will take assessments to the value of 60 credits in each year. Each module consists of a range of assessments including assignments, module reflections, teacher and peer observations, a micro teach (in module 1), and a progress log where you reflect on different aspects of your development. There are 4 observations carried out in year 1 and 4 observations in year 2. These provide the opportunity for trainees to apply their knowledge and understanding, to improve subject specialist teaching and to receive practical advice.

This qualification offers you a breadth of potential employment routes including Further Education colleges, sixth form colleges, adult and community learning, work-based learning and prison education. If you are appropriately qualified, on successful completion of the Diploma in Education and Training you may progress onto the BA (Hons) Education and Professional Training or the MA in Professional Learning and Education.

Entry requirements

• Trainees must be working as teachers/trainers in a post-compulsory environment for a minimum of 40 hours in year 1 and 60 hours in year 2. We require a letter from your place of employment to verify this.
• GCSE English and maths at A*-C or equivalent.
• A qualification at level 3 or above in your area of expertise.
• You will need to nominate a mentor from your setting/organisation – they should hold a recognised teaching/training qualification and have been in a teaching/training role for at least 3 years.
• You must have (or will need to obtain) a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check issued within the last 3 years.
• If you already hold a university Introductory Award or Certificate in Education and Training you may be able to join the Diploma course at a later stage. This will be discussed with you at interview. You will be required to present your original certificates at interview – photocopies are not accepted. You will also be asked to undertake a short, online initial assessment in English and maths.
