Fisheries Management

The fisheries team has an array of experience ranging from freshwater fisheries management specialists, construction, marine, fish health and disease, angling, fish farming and aquatics specialists. All have worked in the industry in various sectors and bring this knowledge and experience to the delivery of the course.

Students will develop and enhance a range of skills including the practical fishery management skills and design, communication, knowledge of fish biology and health, disease identification and treatment, management of aquatic environments and the interactions that occur. Angling knowledge and skills are also developed whilst considering a range of angling skills and opportunities.

Knowledge of and practical skills of current aquaculture methods are learnt and developed along with a range of environmental science areas and subjects.

Nick Pierpoint

Head of Faculty, Agriculture and Fisheries Management

With a BSc (Hons) in Aquaculture and Fisheries Management from Portsmouth University, Nick also has extensive experience in the fisheries and aquaculture industries. Prior to joining the College, Nick worked in both international salmonid and cyprinid farming as well as in prawn production in Asia. Nick also carries out work as a consultant for freshwater fisheries management and conservation, advising many different clients.

Nick is particularly interested in the natural habitat of the wild trout and the monitoring of populations in the nearby River Bourne. This has led to a long-term study of the population and currently has 14 years of research data.

Nick has taught Aquaculture & Fisheries Management for over 14 years now and has overseen the development of the teaching and research facilities available to students studying. With excellent links to industry, he is able to provide current research topics and utilise outside resources to enhance teaching.
