Are you interested in farming? Have you ever wondered how a job in farming will change throughout the year? We are going to cover the four seasons of farming, showcasing the dynamic nature of the industry, and ultimately informing our next generation of farmers.
Autumn
During the autumn time, farmers get to see the reward of their growing efforts over the year. Harvest begins in mid-September; this is a difficult yet very rewarding time of the year. All crops must be dry, harvested, and ready for storage during this time. Beef calves are also born at this time, making it an exciting time of the year for beef cattle farmers.
Winter
Winter can be a time of rest and reflection for farmers, reviewing their plans for the year ahead. This is also a time where farmers can fix equipment and prepare for the next season. In terms of livestock, the winter can cause some problems due to the lower temperatures and therefore all livestock is well monitored during this time.
Spring
At this time the crops are planted in the fields and maintained using fertilizers and herbicides. This is a very exciting time for livestock as many young are born at this time. However, this makes more work for the farmers monitoring and taking care of these animals.
Summer
Farmers will continue to monitor the crops at this time, maintaining weed control, fertilizer needs or pest management. Hay bales are also collected during this time in preparation for the rest of the year. Again, farmers will monitor the livestock particularly the temperature of the animals.
