A cohort of GCSE English students at Hadlow College recently took part in the long established (since 1991) Young Writers Competition, which asked students to write their own thrilling mini saga called “Trapped” in just 100 words.
The National Writing Competition is run throughout the academic year for nurseries, primary and secondary schools. Usually running poetry competitions at the beginning of each half term and creative writing competitions in the second half catering towards both primary and secondary schools.
Rachel Smith, Hadlow College, GCSE Lecturer received the information in the post from Young Writers about their competition and decided it would be a great exercise for her students. After submitting the entries, a total of 33 stories, the students had created were published which is simply outstanding.
Rachel Smith said, “I loved the whole experience - the students embraced an awesome theme and really wrote themselves proud. The standard of creative writing was outstanding and when our students were chosen to become published authors the surprise and pride in what they had achieved was incredible. It was a terrific experience to be a part of!”
James Gillet studying a BTEC National Extended Diploma in Horticulture L3 said, “I didn't think that I could get in (the book) but as I have it's given me a confidence boost and is allowing me to have the motivation to work towards my final grade... It was definitely the best 100 words I have ever written.”
