A dedicated Hadlow College student is in the zone for industry success next month after being shortlisted for one of the UK’s most prestigious learner awards.

Max Sutton has been named a finalist for the 2025 Land-Based and Environment Learner (LBEL) Awards. The winners will be announced at a glittering ceremony in the West Midlands on Thursday, 27 November.

As an apprentice greenkeeper at the London Golf Club, Max made history earlier this year by becoming the first person in England to complete the revised Golf Greenkeeping Apprenticeship Standard (Version 1.1).

That achievement has now earned him a place among the nation’s most talented learners invited for a celebration of their success at the National Conference Centre in Solihull next month.

Hope West, Head of Apprenticeships for North Kent College Group, including Hadlow College, said: “We are so proud of Max and what he has achieved in his time with us at Hadlow College.

“Being named a finalist in the LBEL Awards marks a significant milestone in Max’s journey, one built on dedication, skill and a genuine passion for the greenkeeping industry.

“By being the first to complete the revised Golf Greenkeeping Apprenticeship Standard, he has paved the way for future learners and helped shape the future of professional training within the sector.”

Anthony Stockwell, Senior Skills Trainer (Golf Greenkeeping and Sports Turf, Hadlow College, added: “During his course he demonstrated outstanding competence in a range of essential tasks all while maintaining the highest standards of health and safety. Alongside this, he produced a comprehensive portfolio of evidence that highlighted his technical knowledge, problem-solving skills, and professional behaviours.

“His commitment and high level of performance led to a well-earned promotion from trainee to fully qualified greenkeeper at the London Golf Club. His success represents a new standard of excellence and serves as an inspiration for other apprentices embarking on their own career journeys.”

The LBEL Awards, organised by land-based training and qualifications provider, Lantra in partnership with Landex, recognise excellence across a range of disciplines, including agriculture, horticulture, forestry, countryside management and sports turf.

This year’s ceremony will be hosted by wildlife presenter Kate Humble and will bring together educators, employers, and industry leaders to honour those making exceptional contributions to their chosen professions. With over 170 nominations submitted from across the country, reaching the finalist stage is an outstanding accomplishment reflecting Max’s dedication, professionalism, and enthusiasm for his work.
