Man stood on golf course

A pioneering Hadlow College student has become the first person in England to successfully complete the new Level 3 Advanced Sports Turf Technician Apprenticeship Standard and achieve it with distinction in all areas!

Pat West, head of projects at the historic Crowborough Beacon Golf Club in Sussex and student at Hadlow College, passed his End Point Assessment, awarded by Lantra, marking a significant milestone for the sports turf industry and apprenticeship education in the UK.

The Level 3 assessment tested a broad range of Pat’s advanced skills, knowledge, and professional behaviours. As part of the rigorous process, he was required to deliver a technical presentation, where he explored the turfgrass disease Microdochium Patch, conducting detailed research, data collection, and analysis to underpin his findings.

In addition, Pat completed a professional discussion supported by an extensive portfolio. This coursework demonstrated his contributions to projects across multiple areas of the golf course, showcasing the expertise and commitment he developed during his apprenticeship.

Reflecting on the experience, Pat said: “The examination process was extremely challenging but also hugely rewarding. To be the first person in England to complete this qualification feels incredible, and I couldn’t be prouder of what I’ve achieved.”

Pat’s success is not only a personal triumph but also a source of inspiration for others. He has already arranged a return visit to Hadlow College to support the next cohort of apprentices preparing for their own assessments, keen to share his experience and offer advice to those following in his footsteps.

Wayne Syres, Skills Coach at Hadlow College, expressed his pride in Pat’s achievement: “I’m absolutely delighted for Pat. He has shown unwavering determination and a real passion for the industry. To be the first in England to achieve this apprenticeship is a fantastic accomplishment. I couldn’t be prouder of his achievements or the future he has ahead of him.”

Sarah Johnson, End Point Assessment Project Manager at Lantra, commented: “Congratulations Pat on achieving your Advanced Sports Turf Technician L3 apprenticeship. You showed distinctive knowledge and skills throughout your end point assessment. Keep up the excellent work.”

Pat continues to work at Crowborough Beacon Golf Club, a prestigious heathland course with a rich history nestled in the East Sussex landscape.

This news comes hot on the heels of fellow Hadlow student Max Sutton, being named as the first apprentice in England to achieve the revised Golf Greenkeeping version 1.1 standard.

Hadlow College is part of North Kent College, one of the country’s leading apprenticeship providers, and a range of apprenticeships are offered at its leafy campus.

As part of National Apprenticeship Week earlier this year, a number of Hadlow College students and alumni praised the opportunities an apprenticeship had provided them with.
