Hadlow College will return to the world-renowned RHS Chelsea Flower Show this month, where students and staff will unveil an innovative garden inspired by the mathematical patterns found in nature.
Following a Bronze medal in 2024 and a Silver Gilt in 2025, we are aiming high for further success in 2026.
This year’s exhibit, titled The Magic Number, will explore the how the Fibonacci sequence, a numerical pattern, appears throughout the natural world, from flower petals and seed arrangements to branching trees and spirals on shells. It will be located within the Grand Pavilion, adjacent to this year’s main Show Gardens.
The 7m x 5m garden has been in development since December, with construction underway since January. Built in modular sections, it will be transported to London and assembled on site ahead of the show. The final design will feature approximately 4,000 plants, including many grown by Hadlow College students, showcasing a diverse and carefully curated planting scheme.

Ian Fleming, Head Gardener at Hadlow College said: “This year’s garden demonstrates how maths is embedded in nature. The Fibonacci sequence can be seen throughout the garden’s design and planting, reflecting the patterns we find all around us.”
Student involvement remains at the heart of the project, with learners across all levels contributing to the design, build and presentation of the garden, even being on the stand at the Chelsea Flower Show to talk to visitors about their garden.
“It’s an incredible opportunity,” said Alan Harvey, Head of Curriculum for Horticulture and Floristry said, “Students gain hands-on experience, develop practical and teamwork skills, and engage with the public at one of the most prestigious events in the world.”
