Why do students access mental health support? 

We are here to support you with a wide range of difficulties that you may experience during your time at college. Some of the most common issues students speak to us about include anxiety and depression, bereavement, self-esteem, confidence, and life changes. 

You can talk to our Welfare and Safeguarding team about any issue that is affecting your wellbeing. Our team will work with you understand your situation and assist you the right support. 

Counselling 

What is Counselling? 

Counselling at NKC Hadlow College gives you the opportunity to talk about any difficulties you may be facing in a safe and supportive environment. It allows you to explore your thoughts and feelings openly in a way that may not always feel possible with friends or family.

The counsellor is there to listen without judgement or giving direct advice. Instead, they will help you understand your thoughts and emotions more clearly and support you in finding your own ways of coping and moving forward.

Is Counselling Confidential? 

The counselling service at NKC Hadlow College is confidential. This means that anything shared during your assessment and counselling sessions will not be discussed with parents, guardians, or academic staff.

However, there are some limits to confidentiality, and these will be fully explained to you during your first appointment, so you are clear about how your information is handled.

What happens at my first counselling appointment? 

Your first counselling appointment will include:

  • An initial assessment and discussion about what has brought you to counselling 
  • An opportunity to ask questions about what the service 
  • A chance to discuss what you hope to gain from the counselling sessions
  • Planning any future appointments

What happens after I request support? 

Once you request mental health support, a member of the Welfare and Safeguarding Team will contact you to discuss your needs in more detail.
