Hand planting seed in soil

Today (5 December) marks World Soil Day, a global reminder that healthy soil is the foundation of food, life and a thriving planet.

It’s a sobering thought that by 2050, agricultural production will need to increase by 60% to meet the growing demand for food. With over 95% of our food depending on soil, it’s never been more vital to protect this often-overlooked natural resource.

At Hadlow College, we’re proud to play a role in training the next generation of growers and land stewards through our wide range of Agriculture and Horticulture courses. Sustainability runs through everything we do; from the way we manage our land to the cutting-edge technology we teach with.

Our Agriculture students gain hands-on experience with every stage of the farming cycle - lambing, shearing, ploughing, harvesting, machinery maintenance, and livestock care, all while learning about regenerative practices that protect soil health.

Meanwhile, our Horticulture students make full use of our industry-leading facilities, including the Thanet Earth Centre of Excellence @ Hadlow College, the UK’s first Centre of Excellence in glasshouse production, and our innovative robotic orchard and vineyard, where AI-driven systems manage irrigation, frost protection, and even fruit picking.

We believe that protecting soil means protecting our future. And we’re proud to help shape professionals who understand how to care for the land as much as they cultivate it.
