Today (5 June) marks World Environment Day, a global occasion dedicated to raising awareness and inspiring action to protect our planet.

As Kent’s only rural and land-based college, this worldwide initiative led by the United Nations resonates strongly with us. Environmental responsibility is woven into everything we do, from the way we look after our land to how we deliver our teaching.

We’re proud to have joined education providers across the globe in supporting the UN’s Race to Zero campaign, making a public commitment to:

  • Direct more resources towards practical climate change research and skills development.
  • Achieve net-zero emissions by 2030, or by 2050 at the very latest.
  • Expand sustainability education across our curriculum, campus operations, and community outreach.

One significant milestone in this journey has been the creation of our innovative robotic orchard and vineyard at Hadlow.

Spanning two hectares, this pioneering facility uses advanced technology such as automated AI management systems, a cutting-edge irrigation, fertigation and frost protection network, and automated fruit-picking equipment.

The crops are cultivated with sustainability at the forefront. Drones monitor bud set, forecast yields, and track plant development, enabling precise use of nutrients and targeted pest or disease control. Throughout the orchard, sensors measure soil moisture, relative humidity, light levels (PAR), rainfall, and other data, with new capabilities continually in development.

Beyond our campus, we’re collaborating with Kent’s Further Education Colleges and the Chamber of Commerce on a forward-looking project tackling decarbonisation and addressing skills shortages in key industries.

These initiatives reflect our commitment to equipping future generations with the knowledge, skills, and passion needed to safeguard the environment for the good of our communities and the economy.
