Today (Monday 2 February) is World Wetlands Day, an international day of awareness shining a spotlight on one of the planet’s most vital, yet most threatened, ecosystems.
Wetlands play a crucial role in global biodiversity, water purification, climate resilience, flood protection, and livelihoods. But these precious areas are disappearing at an alarming rate. Since the 1700s, we’ve lost nearly 90% of the world’s wetlands, and they continue to vanish three times faster than forests.
That’s why World Wetlands Day is so important. It marks the anniversary of the Convention on Wetlands, signed in 1971, and aims to educate and inspire action to protect and restore wetlands globally.
At Hadlow College, we’re proud to support wetland conservation through our Fisheries Management courses. Our expert teaching team, with experience across freshwater fisheries, fish health, aquaculture, angling and aquatic environments, help students gain the knowledge and practical skills needed to manage and protect aquatic ecosystems.
From fish health and biology to aquatic husbandry, ecology, and environmental science, students study the full spectrum of aquatic care while also learning vital skills in fishery management, habitat design, and sustainable angling practices.
We work closely with industry leaders like The Environment Agency, Angling Direct, and Coombe Bank Fisheries, giving students valuable real-world experience.
If you’re passionate about conserving our freshwater ecosystems, and want to build a career that protects these vital habitats, a course in Fisheries Management at Hadlow College could be the perfect fit.
