Animal Management students at NKC Hadlow College have raised £300 for African vulture conservation after organising a successful bake sale to coincide with a special guest talk from Kerri Wolter, CEO of conservation charity VULPRO.
Held on 21 October, the event brought students and members of the public together to learn more about VULPRO’s work protecting African vultures through rescue, rehabilitation, research and conservation in South Africa.
Level 2 and Level 3 Animal Management students went above and beyond to support the cause, staying up through the night to bake an array of treats for a busy sale during the talk. They also sold apple juice produced by the college, helping boost the fundraising total to an impressive £300.
The students took responsibility for the event themselves, from setting up tables and displaying their bakes to creating price labels, listing ingredients and allergens, and managing sales. They carried out the work with minimal supervision, demonstrating initiative, teamwork and a real commitment to making a difference.
Jo Saunders, Head of Curriculum for Animal Management at NKC Hadlow College, said: “I’m incredibly proud of our students for the commitment and enthusiasm they showed in organising this fundraiser. They took ownership of the whole event, and raising £300 is a fantastic achievement and a wonderful example of students putting their skills into action to make a difference.”
The event also highlighted the links between animal education and conservation. NKC Hadlow College offers students opportunities to develop specialist skills with birds of prey through its partnership with Willows Bird of Prey Centre. Eligible Level 3 Animal Management students can work towards the nationally recognised RAPTOR Award, gaining theoretical knowledge and practical experience in areas including bird welfare, husbandry, safe handling and falconry.
